An adaptive machine has the capacity to change over on the fly, and to reconfigure with different production modules on the same base machine platform.

This new generation of production machinery is readily adaptable to constant size and format changes. In addition, it is reconfigurable to radical and unforeseen requirements through corresponding equipment changes, such as replacing a welding module with a forming module. Read more here.

Are you on the route to building or deploying a smart manufacturing or intelligent transport system (ITS)? If the answer is YES, you probably have your sights set on Chicago’s McCormick Place for September 10-15, 2018. On Friday, September 14th, the Industrial Internet Consortium will host a thought-leading Global Event Series forum in the Solutions Theater within Hannover Messe USA, co-located with the International Manufacturing Technology Show (IMTS).

Join the IIC Friday and hear from industry leaders and member experts who are disrupting the industry and driving Manufacturing & ITS technologies forward. Learn how participation in the Industrial Internet Consortium and the IIC Testbed Program enables you and your organization to create the future of industry, have a voice in setting the standards, best practices and processes of the industrial internet. The IIC Friday forum follows on the heels of the IIC quarterly member meeting, also in the Chicago area. These members-only meetings are where members come to network, drive adoption of the IIoT, identify and address industry-wide issues and technologies and develop industry best practices. For more information on membership in the Industrial Internet Consortium, see the link below.

All attendees of Hannover Messe USA and IMTS are welcome to the free Solutions Theater. Please join the IIC for a networking reception (snacks and refreshments) at 12:15pm in the B&R Automation booth 134111 at IMTS (East Building, Level 3). The Time Sensitive Networking (TSN) Testbed will be on display in the booth.

Next generation industrial transport technology delivers key advantages for advanced manufacturing solutions. The flexible, operator-friendly conveyors make production more efficient while simultaneously improving product quality. Make your line more economic and effective at any volume – from mass production down to batch size one.

This new technology from B&R features independent shuttles moved by permanent magnets along a long-stator linear motor track. Product movements can be configured individually, including variable speed and acceleration as well as batch grouping and ungrouping. The dramatic increase in processing speed makes your line more productive.

What are the tools and tricks that enable adaptive machines in the larger smart-factory framework? Each order is turned into a unique recipe or bill-of materials, and each product is independently controlled through its fabrication, assembly and packaging via track technology. One product equals one shuttle that moves through workstations required to produce the order. This track technology will vary by manufacturer, but the concept is consistent. Batch-of-one manufacturing can enable an enterprise to streamline the e-commerce model by shipping directly from production line to consumer, which saves everyone money.
